Dr David Comyn graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1971. After completing his Internship on the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Circuit in Medicine and Surgery he spent 2 years in general practice in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). He returned to Cape Town to specialize in Anaesthesiology at Groote Schuur Hospital. He was awarded the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthesiology of South Africa in 1977.

During his Fellowship training he was encouraged to pursue Critical Care Medicine and he was appointed Clinical Lead at the newly upgraded Intensive Care Unit in Port Elizabeth in 1978. He practiced in hospital and private practice until 2020. He served on the council of the Critical Care Society of South Africa, serving as President in 1994. He also served on the South African Society of Anaesthesiology as the Eastern Cape representative.

In 2020 he worked in the United kingdom for 10 years and then in Australia for 9 years. During this time he was awarded the Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand Collage of Anaesthesiologists.

He retired from his speciality in 2018 and returned to South Africa to care fro his wife during her cancer illness. During this time he decided to give back to cancer care by training in Photo Dynamic Therapy in Australia. He currently treats cancer patients in St Francis Bay in South Africa.
