Slide 7: PDT Mechanism: Angiogenesis, Light Response, and Immune Mobilization

The first image is a cancer tumour. One of the characteristics of cancer is its ability to grow its own blood vessels called angioneogenesis. This enables the tumour to absorb more than its share of food as it grows to the detriment of normal cells and organs. This is why cancer patients lose weight. The middle image shows the chlorophyll in the tumour cells responding to light in the near infrared red spectrum to release reactive oxygen species (viz. photosynthesis) to damage the tumour by necrosis, apoptosis and autophagy. It also causes blood to clot in the arteries supplying the tumour, depriving it of oxygen and food. The third image is the most important. This process mobilises the immune system to produce immune cells which mop up the dead and dying tumour cells. This is important because PDT mobilises the immune defence unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy which depress it.
