Slide 9 gives some idea of the complicated laboratory process of studying proteins. The consequence is that it is an expensive process and confined to sophisticated research facilities. It will certainly be simplified and find its way into the field of cancer diagnosis and treatment in the future.
Assay of urine proteins in cancer patients is a useful diagnostic tool. It turns out that not only are these proteins SPECIFIC for cancer but they also may differentiate between benign and malignant tumours. Prostate cancer is a good example because surgery and/or chemotherapy may not be appropriate
