Slide 19: PET Scan – Positron Emission Tomography

PET scan. This stands for Positron Emission Tomography. I introduced the Warburg Effect when describing how the Chlorophyll is concentrated only in the cancer cells. Dr Otto Warburg proved that glucose is the preferred food for all cancer cells 1928. The PET scan depends on a small radio-active isotope attached to the glucose molecule. This is injected intravenously and the isotope concentrates in the tumour. When scanned the tumours exact location is identified. This is a very safe use of radiation because the half-life of the isotope is very short, about 4 hours. This slide shows a cancer of the tongue.
